How to enable BMW remote start from your phone

What do I need?
A BMW with a petrol engine that the compatibility list names as available: most G series cars from 2018 on and the 1 Series F40, and the 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X4 and their M models after their facelift. Diesels, plug-in hybrids and electric cars cannot take Remote Engine Start.
The MHD Universal adapter, which plugs into the diagnostic port under the dashboard and connects your phone to the car over Wi-Fi. Casto Flasher does not sell it; 55Parts does.

Step by step
Get the app
Install Casto Flasher from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with Apple, Google or an email address.
Connect to the car
At the car, plug the adapter into the diagnostic port and switch the ignition on without starting the engine. Join the adapter’s Wi-Fi on your phone, turn airplane mode on, then Wi-Fi back on. The app shows when the phone reaches the adapter.
Run the free check
Tap Add a car. The app reads your car in 30 seconds to 5 minutes and changes nothing on it, then lists each feature your car can take with its price, or the reason it cannot.
Buy Remote Engine Start
Add it to your order and pay in the app, once, for this car. If the installation cannot be finished, you get the full amount back.
Read the car for the installation
Tap Install. Still on the adapter’s Wi-Fi, the app reads the parts of the car the feature needs, in a few minutes.
Wait for your files
Turn airplane mode off and join your normal network. The activation comes through the official channel and your files are prepared online, usually in 3 to 5 minutes. You can close the app while it runs.
Install
Back on the adapter’s Wi-Fi with the ignition on, the app checks five things, then you hold Install. It takes about 10 minutes. Do not open a door, start the engine or unplug anything while it runs.
Turn it on and start the engine
Turn Remote Start on in the car’s climate settings. Lock the car and press the lock button on your key three times, and the engine starts. Where the car is connected, the manufacturer’s own phone app shows the same function as "climatise now".
What can stop it
Engine software rewritten on the bench by a tuner can refuse the licence Remote Engine Start needs, and the free check cannot see that. If that is your car, write to us before you buy.
The engine runs while the cabin is conditioned, for 15 minutes at the most, and then stops on its own. Do not use it in a closed garage, and check the rules on running a stationary engine where you park.
