Raising the top speed limit: chip tune, factory option, or coding

Every BMW leaves the factory limited to 250 km/h, M cars included. Three ways lead past that number, and they differ far more than the number suggests.

Why it ends at 250

The 250 km/h limit is policy, not hardware: the German manufacturers’ old gentlemen’s agreement. M cars in particular can go faster, and BMW itself sells the difference as the M Driver’s Package, option 7ME, with a model-specific limit typically between 270 and 305 km/h.

Way 1: the chip tuner

Tuning shops rewrite the engine software; going rates are roughly 799 to 1,799 euros. It works, and it is a real modification: the maps in the engine controller change, the manufacturer neither recommends nor covers it, and on current, encrypted engine controllers the job can be harder than the price list makes it look.

Way 2: the factory option, ordered new

Ordered with the car, the M Driver’s Package is a four figure option and comes tied to a driver training. Booking it afterwards through a dealer is possible for some models and not for others, and it stays the most expensive route.

Way 3: the same option, coded onto your car

Casto Flasher installs option 7ME itself: no map changed, no part swapped, the electronics simply apply the factory limit for your model, and the app reads the option back off the car afterwards to confirm it is there. BMW offers the option across generations, the current G cars as well as the F80, F82 and F83 M3 and M4 and the pre-facelift F90 M5; whether your exact car can take it is what the free check answers first.

The price is shown in the app after the free check. You pay once, for one car.

Honestly: only the car gets faster

A raised limit is not permission, and the places where it means anything are stretches without a posted limit and the track. BMW ties the factory option to a driver training for a reason; the training is theirs, and we cannot deliver it with the coding.

Tyres, brakes and judgment matter more above 250 than below it. If that sentence reads like a lecture, this option may not be for you.

Questions

What does raising the Vmax limit really cost?

At a tuning shop roughly 799 to 1,799 euros; ordered from the factory, a four figure amount tied to a training. Our price is shown in the app after the free check of your car; you pay once, per car.

Does the limit disappear completely?

No. The limit the factory assigns your model with the option applies, typically 270 to 305 km/h depending on the car. A car with no limit at all is chip tuning territory, with everything that brings.

Whether your M can take the option, the app tells you for free

About 5 minutes at the car, and you pay only after your own car has said yes.
